Your Support In Action - Emma and Leigh

Meet Emma and Leigh

“Emma* does what Emma wants to do.” That was what the teacher said of three-year-old Emma, who was referred to EFC’s Early Childhood Outreach (EChO) program because of her volatile classroom behavior. Emma refused to participate in group activities and play with her classmates, hit and spat at others, and rarely spoke.

Our therapist met with Emma’s mother, Leigh*, who shared that she had experienced abuse at the hands of Emma’s father before he left the family and Emma’s life. She had never disclosed that information to Emma’s child care center or doctor.

Emma’s mother and the EFC therapist determined that Emma’s classroom lacked structure, communication, and clear expectations. After the therapist attempted to work with teachers at Emma’s child care center without significant progress, Leigh and the therapist transferred her to a new child care center EChO has partnered with for many years.

In her new child care center, Emma has teachers who implement consistent routines, clear expectations, and positive reinforcement in their classroom. Emma is now speaking in full sentences and enjoys playing with other kids.

EFC’s therapist recommended a mental health evaluation for Emma and referred Leigh to professionals who specialize in trauma. With further therapeutic support, Emma could heal from the abuse she witnessed as a very small child. Emma is now on track to a happier, healthier life.

This story illustrates YOUR support in action. If it weren’t for compassionate people like you, Emma would not be able to access the support needed to thrive in school and be healthy emotionally. Unfortunately, so many families can’t afford the therapy and other resources they need to help their children thrive. With your support, kids like Emma can flourish.

Dear reader, we want to remind you that your support and engagement allow us to make children’s better by providing free education, counseling, and support to break dysfunctional patterns of generational abuse and neglect in adults and other children’s caregivers. You have the power to ensure Durham area children can access the support they need, no matter their family’s income.

Thank you for being a hero for children!
