Parenting Trap #7: The ‘Martyr’ Trap

Sometimes parents become so involved with parenting that they sacrifice their own intimacy, companionship, recreation, privacy, and fun. When this happens, their relationships with their partners suffer and they end up feeling dissatisfied.

When parents balance their adult lives with the needs of their children, everyone wins. Quality parenting takes place when parents have the space they need to recharge and look at spending time with their children as a joy, rather than a grind.

What to try instead:

  • Take care of your relationship: It is important for parents to make an effort to do things they used to enjoy doing together before they had children. Try to spend some special time with your partner every day. This might be brief time to talk, cuddle, read together, or make progress on a shared project.
