Motivational Interviewing Introduction & Skill Building—Partnering to Empower Clients to Pursue Their Goals
This training is a fundraiser for EFC—100% of the monies raised go to make children’s lives better by strengthening their families, teachers, and communities through proven counseling, coaching, and training.
Program Description:
Motivational Interviewing is an evidence-based communication style designed to help people identify their readiness, willingness and ability to make meaningful change in their lives. Together we will explore this client centered approach to working with individuals to help them prepare for and commit to making change. We will talk about techniques to draw out people in order to find out their motivations and help them become empowered to make change to meet their own goals rather than trying to persuade people to comply with our plans. This introduction will involve a number of exercises to help distinguish the practice of Motivational Interviewing from other types of communication or psychoeducation. Motivational interviewing can be added into other models to reduce attrition and increase the likelihood of participants’ success. Through practice, participants will continue to develop their comfort and confidence using Motivational Interviewing. Exercises will provide opportunities to identify change and sustain talk, make meaningful complex reflections, intentionally evoke and expand change talk, and soften sustain talk.
Learning Objectives:
Upon Completion of this workshop, participant should be able to:
Explain the difference between persuading and using Motivational Interviewing;
Describe benefits to evoking motivations rather than sharing information about risks and benefits
Demonstrate the ability to ask open ended questions, reflect, and affirm clients;
Discuss next steps to support implementing Motivational Interviewing
Target Audience:
Professionals who work in public health, parent education, mental health, or substance abuse.

About The Trainer: Rachel Galanter, MPH
Rachel Galanter is the Technical Assistance and Consultation Lead at El Futuro. She has over 30 years of experience with children, youth, and families as a crisis counselor, case manager, children’s advocate, teacher, and parenting coach. A trainer certified by the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers and Trauma Resource Institute, she provides training and coaching to professionals on client engagement, cultivating resilience, cultural humility and responsiveness, cross cultural communication, and implementation of best practices. Rachel shares strategies and tools to help other agencies in meeting clients where they are and empowering them to achieve their goals. In addition to her professional work on behalf of families, Rachel was a foster parent for a decade and added two daughters (and now four grandchildren) to her family from that time.
