Meet Evan and Alana
Young children explore and learn about their world, relationships, and emotions through play. Evan*, a 4-year-old boy, was experiencing trouble at school and at home: he threw tantrums, avoided group activities, resisted his teacher’s directions, and grew furious when he had to wait his turn.
Evan was referred to EFC, and our therapist recommended that Evan’s teacher, Alana*, play with him one-on-one. One day Alana and Evan did a floor puzzle and other activities together, and suddenly he was requesting to sit next to the teacher and hold her hand. Our therapist also introduced Tucker Turtle, a book and toy that teaches kids how to identify and manage their feelings, which Evan loved.
Within two weeks, both Alana and Evan’s parents noticed progress. He began cooperating with Alana’s instructions, playing more with his classmates, and patiently waiting his turn. Evan’s parents introduced one-on-one play with their son at home, which has changed his behavior for the better. When adults make time for meaningful, one-on-one play with the children in their lives, those children flourish.
